Hydrogen Sulfide Gas: Why You Should Be Concerned (H2S)?
Often called “rotten egg odors,” Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is a colorless gas commonly referred to in some cities as sewer gas. It is highly poisonous and highly corrosive in lift stations and sewer lines.
How does it form?
H2S is generated when long-standing sewage becomes stagnant or septic. In these anaerobic conditions the sewage can contain up to 6000 parts per million (ppm) of H2S. In a damp/wet environment — such as a lift station or wastewater treatment plant — H2S can form sulfuric acid which will corrode cement and steel structures. Repairs to corrosion from H2S alone costs cities millions of dollars.
H2S Levels – the Highs and Lows
H2S is easily smelled at levels as low as 7 ppm. Even low levels can cause coughing, headache and eye irritation. As the ppm levels increase it becomes more difficult to smell. At 50-100 ppm, it may cause the human sense of smell to fail completely. Above 300 ppm, it deadens the olfactory senses after a few inhalations — which can cause a person to inhale toxic, or even fatal, doses. Above 600 ppm, hydrogen sulfide gas may paralyze the lungs and cause death. For more information see our Hydrogen Sulfide Toxicity Chart.
The Solution
AQUAFIX offers an easy and safe way to knock out hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or sulfide odors from lift stations, RVs, and smelly wastewater, ponds, or lagoons. If you are working in an area that has problems with H2S, ventilate the area well, carry a H2S monitor, use our De-Sulph-A-Nator. Just pour or meter in and it will immediately encapsulate and remove, not mask, all odors. Typcially in a 200,000 gallon per day lift station a city may add a gallon once or twice per week; a lagoon system, 1 quart per acre foot of water; and a sludge storage tank, 1 gallon per 5000 gallons of sludge.
We have developed this product to sequester or bind sulfur- and mercaptan-type odors. The De-Sulph-A-Nator forms a permanant bond with the sulfide and it goes away immediately making the air much easier to breathe. It also stops the sulfide corrosion which costs many wastewater plants thousands of dollars. This product is widely used in municipal and industrial WWTPs and is extremely popular because it instantly and permanantly removes odors.
