Q: What Are Foaming Filaments?

A: Three hard-to-treat filaments are the main cause of excessive foaming in wastewater plants (WWTPs). Unfortunately, correctly identifying the filament bacteria in your system can be difficult.

The Problem Bacteria

Nocardia are caused by excess grease, long MCRTs (mean cell residence times) and increases in temperature. [gram (+) bacteria]

Microthrix Parvicella are caused by excess animal and vegetable greases and oils. They prefer low F:M and colder temperatures. [gram (+) bacteria]

Type 1863 are caused by excess greases and fats, low F:M, and a decline in aeration basin pH. [gram (-) bacteria. It will show up as a pink dashed line.]

The VitaStim Solutions

To treat foaming from these three bacteria, we recommend using our VitaStim 2200 or VitaStim 900L liquid – two extremely powerful formulas to digest the available grease and cut off their food source. Usage requirements are system dependent; for recommendations, contact us at 1-888-757-9577 or via email (bugman@teamaquafix.com).

If you're having trouble determining the type of bacteria in your system, we offer our consulting expertise. We can identify the bacteria or we can train your personnel in the identification process. (For small systems with limited budgets, we can still help you. Call us to discuss your situation.)
