Biological Consulting Services

"I learned more in twenty minutes of talking with the Bugman than in my twenty years of running this wastewater plant. You are of great service."- Terry J. Dow Reichhold Production Facility, Chickamagua, GA

For Wastewater Treatment Plants struggling with foam in aeration basins, poor settling or nitrification our services identify the following:
  • What is in my mixed liquor? Filaments? Sliming? Toxicity? Other?
  • What does it mean?
  • How can I change conditions so that it does not occur again?

There have been over 20 different filament "types" classified by morphology and staining characteristics found in wastewater facilities experiencing operational problems.

Although filaments present in low amounts are beneficial for floc formation and good settling properties of activated sludge, when conditions favor their growth to excessive levels they can cause hazardous operational conditions such as sludge bulking and foaming that can become expensive and time-consuming to recover from.

In many cases, identification of the overabundant filament(s) will provide information on the conditions that encouraged the rapid growth and elucidate the best method for control of any issues caused by the filament(s).

Filament Identification Service
  1. Microscopic Examination
    • Note the size and shape of floc particles and/or clumps of microorganisms
    • Note abundance and type of higher zoological lifeforms
    • Bright field wet mount slide preparation stained with crytal violet
    • Bright field Gram stain slide preparation
  2. Based on the microscopic examination, filaments are identified by characteristics observed such as cell shape, size, septa shape and size, presence or absence of a sheath with or without attached growth, and Gram stain results.

021N Beggiatola

021N taking advantage of an unbalanced system or toxicity; Beggiatola caused by high sulfide. The only filament that "swims."

Polysaccharide Estimation Service

Under nutrient-limiting conditions (such as low nitrogen or phosphorus), bacteria are known to store carbohydrates as polysaccharides to be used when nutrient levels return to favorable conditions. These excreted polysaccharides are permeable to water but not to larger particles (as India Ink), and these large particles will provide a background--black in the case of India Ink, around the areas of high amounts of polysaccharides.
  1. India Ink Stain (a subjective estimation of polysaccharide levels).
  2. Quick in vitro analysis to determine what products can break down or limit quantities of excreted polysaccharides.
  3. Quick colorimetric analysis of ammonia and phosphate offered upon request.
Nitrification Service

Our seven steps to nitrification allows the operator to understand each step and why it is vital to the survival of the nitrifying cultures. These organisms are very sensitive to toxicity, and are strict aerobes and prefer a kind and gentle wastewater oprator. Our seven steps guides operators back to nitrification, and more importantly an understanding of what is easy to work on.

Our approach to nitrification examines your entire system, the chemistry you use, and any physical limitations of the plant and your "State of Biology." For more information, please see Ammonia in Wastewater.

Anerobic photoAnaerobic Digestor Consulting: Few things are worse than an upset anaerobic digestor which continually goes acid and/or foams. When working with upset anaerobic digestors or ones which yield less than optimal success, we review your treatment process, detention times, metals levels, fatty acid content, and treatment efficiencies.

Our service is well regarded, fast and concise. Our first phone consultation is free. Cities and industries across North America have come to trust our knowledge and our expertise. We do not mess around. The heterotrophic bacteria in the biological system are responsible for BOD removal and about 10% of nitrogen removal.

Lyons Nocardia

Nitrosomonas and Nictrobacter are chemoautotrophic bacteria and are responsible for ammonia removal. The heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria have a symbiotic relationship and understanding this relationship will help operators to improve their skills. How well they grow and perform impacts BOD, TSS and ammonia removal.

Fungus in wastewater: Fungus is a large branched mass. It will resemble Nocardia except much, much larger. Fungus in wastwater causes sludge bulking and is most often caused when the pH drops below 6.5 .

CustomerComments: "You came in figured out what our problem was, and nailed it. Two weeks later our plant was better, you really are an expert! Thank you!" - J.C. Midwest Renderer

"Your technical service was unbelievable. I thought that Nocardia would never go away. Thank you!" - BG. Wisconsin Dairy Plant

"You nailed it, you identified the problem fast. We struggle no more. Great job."- Justin, Wisconsin Renderer.

"I wish I would have called you 15 years ago" Mel, Northern California.

Biological Consulting Rate: $140 per hour

Most samples cost between $140-$480.00, depending on the complexity of the sample to complete a biologcal report. 200 ml samples of foam or MLSS are packed on ice and sent next day air to:
